When you think of the mountain west, the last place that comes to mind is Nevada and the Great Basin ranges it possesses. With 314 named ranges, Nevada is the most mountainous state in the lower 48. If you are used to hiking in places like the Sierras or Rockies, you may not fully appreciate the beauty and remoteness of the Great Basin. There are no lottery systems or permits to hike a trail. There are no parking passes or having to reserve a crammed summer campsite 6 months in advance. The game plan is simple. Do your homework, plan for the worst, and drive.

The Great Basin is one huge playground where you can basically park anywhere and call it home for a few days. The solitude and remoteness of the region is as haunting as it is enchanting. Prepare to find yourself on your own and many miles from services. Roads can range from good to absolute garbage but will more than likely be dirt. Major peaks can go unclimbed for years at a time. Outside of hunting season, you probably won’t see another person on your adventure. Wanna get a little out there and see this for yourself? Come join the Great Basin Challenge!
